Obesity Worse Than Lack Of Exercise

Medical News Today reports: “Just 20 minutes of brisk walking a day may be all it takes to lessen a sedentary person’s risk of early death, says a new study. The researchers also found the risk of early death due to lack of exercise is double that posed by obesity and does not necessarily depend on being obese or overweight.”

These latest results were collected by a European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition study. It included 334,161 men and women over a period of 12 years, during which time 21,438 passed away. The study followed weight, waist measurements, and the exercise routine of each participant. What they discovered was rather shocking in that by adding a quick twenty minute walk to the average activity of the day lives could have been saved, or at least the risk of an early death due to inactivity could have been reduced by up to 30 %. Smithsonian Magazine writes: “If all inactive people did that little bit of exercise, deaths across the board would theoretically be reduced by 7.35 percent. By comparison, if no one was obese, that would reduce deaths by 3.66 percent.”
These findings have catapulted the health and nutrition industry into a whole new manner of research, impacting the way that many previously thought about the overweight community and the health risks that were involved. While it is easy to make the blanket statement that all obese people are sedentary and this is why these results were noted, in this situation it just isn’t the case.
